Orthodontist Central Park, Denver
Is it time for your child's first orthodontic check? Has your teen started asking about braces? Or are you finally making room for your own treatment?
At aligned. Orthodontics, the first step is understanding what needs attention and when. We welcome Central Park families and adults at our office at 1215 S Pearl St in Denver's Platt Park neighborhood. Board-certified orthodontist Dr. Amanda Vanderstelt helps you make sense of your teeth, bite and treatment choices.

Dr. Amanda Vanderstelt is a board-certified orthodontist who treats children, teens and adults at one office on South Pearl Street in Platt Park. Standard orthodontic consultations are complimentary.
Start with the question you came in with
“Should we have our child checked yet?”
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7. If something concerns you sooner, you can ask earlier. Having a mix of baby and adult teeth gives the orthodontist useful information about how the bite is developing. A check can lead to monitoring, a recommendation for treatment, or reassurance that nothing needs to happen now.
Our guide to a child's first orthodontic check explains what parents often notice.
“My teen is ready. What should we think through?”
Start with the bite, then talk about the routine. How would your teen manage removable aligners during school lunches? Would fixed braces be a better fit? What questions do they have about appearance, cleaning or activities?
Bring your teen into the conversation. The daily responsibilities should be clear to the person wearing the appliance, as well as the parent arranging appointments.
“What if this appointment is for me?”
Adults are welcome here too. You may want to address crowding, discuss a bite concern or understand whether a lower-visibility option could work for you. Tell us what you hope to change and what matters in your day-to-day life. The examination comes before a recommendation, so you don't need to arrive with a treatment picked out.
For growing smiles
A first check helps you understand the timing
Seeing an orthodontist early gives you a chance to ask about development while your child is growing. It doesn't commit your child to an appliance.
When Dr. Vanderstelt recommends early orthodontic treatment, ask which specific concern it addresses and why treating it now would help. Depending on the findings, the plan might involve an expander or another appliance. For other children, periodic checks are the appropriate next step.
It also helps to ask what comes afterward. Early treatment may be followed by a later phase of braces or aligners as more permanent teeth arrive. Understanding both stages makes the recommendation easier to weigh.
Useful things to mention include difficulty biting or chewing, teeth that seem crowded, a bite that looks uneven, or concerns about when baby teeth are being lost. You don't need to diagnose the problem before booking.

Your first visit, in four useful conversations
01 / What brought you here?
Tell us what you've noticed and what you'd like to understand. A parent's concern and a child's concern may be different. Both belong in the conversation. Adults can share previous treatment, dental work and current goals.
02 / What does the examination show?
Dr. Vanderstelt evaluates your teeth and bite. The practice uses digital scanning technology to help assess and plan treatment. Ask her to walk you through the findings and explain which ones affect the recommendation.
03 / What are the choices?
Discuss whether treatment is needed, the suitable options and the expected timeline. If the recommendation is to monitor your child's development, ask when to return and what the next check will look for.
04 / What would the commitment involve?
Before choosing a plan, talk through the cost, payment options, home care and follow-up appointments. If school, work or travel limits your availability, bring that up while you are comparing options.

Choose a treatment you can live with
The right appliance needs to suit your orthodontic needs and the person using it. These are useful starting points for the consultation:

Braces stay attached to the teeth. Ask about cleaning around the brackets, food choices and care between appointments.

Invisalign clear aligners are removable. Discuss the prescribed wear schedule and how you'll handle meals, cleaning and keeping track of the trays.

Clear braces offer a less noticeable bracket option. Ask whether they are suitable for the correction you need.
If more than one option is appropriate, compare the everyday responsibilities alongside appearance and cost. Those details matter throughout treatment.

Before treatment starts
Make room for the financial questions
Our team can review your insurance benefits and explain the payment options available for your plan. aligned. offers interest-free payment plans, accepts HSA/FSA payments and offers family discounts for children and parents receiving treatment together.
Ask for the total treatment cost, what is included and how any insurance benefit changes your estimated responsibility. If you are planning care for more than one family member, mention that early. See our payment and affordability information.

A few practical answers
Questions before you book
Should we wait until all the baby teeth are gone?
You can arrange an orthodontic check while baby teeth are still present. The age-7 recommendation is for an evaluation; the examination determines whether treatment should begin or development should be monitored.
Do we need a dentist's referral?
No. You can contact aligned. directly to schedule an orthodontic consultation. Bring any questions your dentist has raised so they can be part of the discussion.
Does everyone in our family need the same treatment?
Each person needs an individual assessment. Siblings can have different bite concerns and treatment timing, and a parent's plan may differ from a child's. Family payment questions can be discussed with the team.
Is the consultation complimentary?
Standard orthodontic consultations for braces, Invisalign and retainers are complimentary. Airway, TMD and jaw surgery evaluations use a separate booking process. Check the consultation options and requirements when choosing your visit.
How do we plan around school and work?
Ask about the expected appointment schedule for your proposed treatment before you start. Tell the team about recurring commitments so you can understand how visits and home care would fit your routine.
